New Delhi: Former India captain Rahul Dravid has reapplied for the post of head of cricket of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), prompting speculations that he will replace head coach Ravi Shastri in his senior national team after the T20 World Cup in November. But there will be a pause. The Cricket Board of India (BCCI) had invited applications after the end of Dravid’s two-year term. According to the new constitution, there is no provision of extension in the contract and the process of selection is started afresh.
Dravid will not be able to become the coach of the Indian team
A BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity, “Yes, Rahul has reapplied for the post of head of cricket. You don’t have to be a genius to understand that he can stay in the position, considering the splendid job he has done to actually change the face of the NCA that has now become a Center of Excellence. Till now no big name has applied for the post except Rahul.”
It is learned that the BCCI has decided to extend the date of submission of applications by a few days so that the interested candidates can get enough time to apply. “The BCCI office-bearers have decided to extend the deadline by a few days from August 15,” the source said. When Rahul is in the running, everyone knows that applying for the post doesn’t make much sense. It is just a formality but yes to be fair, a few more days have been given if anyone feels that he wants to stake a claim.
There was news of Dravid becoming a full-time coach
After the Sri Lanka tour, Dravid had expressed doubts about a full-time role with the Indian team. His application, however, confirms that he still wants to help the national cricket team by working with young cricketers. Meanwhile, Varun Chakraborty and Kamlesh Nagarkoti, who are battling injuries, have once again reached the NCA. Shubman Gill is also in NCA. These three players of Kolkata Knight Riders will undergo rehabilitation cum fitness test and based on this, it will be decided whether they will be able to play in the Indian Premier League or not.
