Mary Kom, considered a strong contender for the medal from India, was defeated by Valencia 3-2 in a close match. Mary Kom’s loss in the pre-quarterfinal match in this way has dealt a big blow to India’s medal hopes.

While Valencia managed to impress three judges with her performance, Mary Kom impressed only two judges.

Both the boxers were punching each other from the beginning of the match but Valencia dominated the opening round 4-1. Experienced boxer Mary Kom of Manipur made a spectacular comeback to win the second and third rounds 3-2. But Valesia was successful in winning this match with the lead of the opening round.

The Indian boxer used the right ‘hook’ very well in the second and third rounds. Mary Kom has previously defeated Valencia in the quarterfinals of the 2019 World Championship. This is Colombian boxer’s first win over Mary Kom.

Like Mary Kom, 32-year-old Valencia is also a very important player for her country. She is the first female boxer to represent her country at the Olympic Games and the first female boxer to win an Olympic medal for the country.
