Tokyo Olympics: Deepak Punia loses Bronze medal match

Indian wrestler Deepak Punia has lost the bronze medal match in the 86 kg weight category in the Tokyo Olympics. Najem Myles Emine of San Marino defeated him 4-2. Deepak was leading 2-1 for 5 minutes 40 seconds. But, after this, Nazem left him behind by collecting two points through a single-leg attack.

The Indian team appealed against the decision which went against them. This gave the opposing wrestler 1 point more and he won the bout 4-2. At the same time, Ravi Kumar Dahiya lost in the final of 57 kg weight category. He had to be content with silver.

Earlier, India has suffered a major setback in women’s wrestling. India’s legendary wrestler and world number-1 Vinesh Phogat had to face defeat in the quarter-final match of the 53 kg weight category. She was defeated 9-3 by Vanessa Kalazinskaya of Belarus. Vinesh’s hopes of winning the bronze have also ended. The wrestler who defeated him could not reach the final.

Wrestler Anshu Malik lost in the bronze medal match. He had to face defeat in the repechage round. She was defeated 5–1 by Valeria Koblova of the Russian Olympic Committee in the repechage match.

Indian men’s hockey team has created history. He ended a drought of 41 years and brought India a bronze medal in hockey. India’s hockey team had earlier won a medal in the Olympics in 1980 in Moscow. Then the team won gold under the captaincy of Vasudevan Bhaskaran. Team India defeated Germany 5-4 in the bronze medal match.
