Tokyo Olympics: Bajrang Punia wins bronze

Bajrang Punia won the sixth medal for India in the Tokyo Olympics. Star wrestler Bajrang defeated Daulat Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan 8-0 in the 65kg category of freestyle wrestling. In the quarterfinal match of 65 kg weight category, Poonia won by defeating Asian Championship bronze medalist Morteza Ghiasi of Iran. Bajrang was at one point trailing 1-0 in the quarter-finals. After this, Bajrang got 2 points in the last minute. Then he threw the Iranian wrestler out of the match. Bajrang was declared the winner by the victory by fall rule.

Bajrang started the Olympics with victory. He won on technical grounds over Kyrgyzstan’s Ernazar Akmataliev in the pre-quarterfinals. Bajrang once took a 3-1 lead over the wrestler from Kyrgyzstan. In the last few seconds, Akmataliev made a comeback and got two points out of the ring twice.

After this the score was leveled at 3-3. At the end of the match, who got the most points together, the result of the match was decided. Bajrang had scored 2 points together. On this basis he was declared the winner.

India has won 7 medals in Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai Chanu won silver in weightlifting, PV Sindhu won bronze in badminton and Lovlina Borgohain won bronze in boxing. Apart from this, on Thursday, the Indian men’s hockey team won bronze and in wrestling, Ravi Dahiya won the silver medal. While Bajrang won the bronze medal and Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal. It has become India’s most successful Olympics.

Wrestler Sushil had made a record for India to win two consecutive medals in the Olympics. Sushil won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Including Ravi and Bajrang, India has won 7 medals in wrestling.

Apart from Ravi and Sushil, Yogeshwar Dutt won bronze in 2012, Sakshi Malik won bronze in 2016 Rio Olympics. KD Jadhav was the first wrestler for India to win a medal in Olympic wrestling. He achieved this feat in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.
