IPL 2020: KXIP’s disappointing run continues as they suffer defeat against KKR

Abu Dhabi: It was an amazing game of cricket as Kolkata Knight Riders registered a thrilling 2-run win over Kings XI Punjab in the 24th match of IPL 2020 played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for KKR as they Mohammed Shami dismissed Rahul Tripathi with a beauty. Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill were involved in a mix-up resulting in Rana’s run-out. KXIP bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing KKR batsmen to score runs easily on a tough pitch. At the end of six overs, KKR made just 25 for 2.

Eoin Morgan came to the crease and looked in decent form putting pressure on Mujeeb Ur Rahman along with Shubman Gill. At the end of the first timeout, KKR scored 49 for 2.

Ravi Bishnoi bowled brilliantly and took the important wicket of Eoin Morgan with a simple catch to Maxwell at long-on. Morgan and Gill put on 49 runs for the 3rd wicket. KKR captain Dinesh Karthik came to the crease looking busy taking singles and rotating the strike. Shubman Gill looked composed with his stroke play. At the end of the second timeout, KKR scored 85 for 3.

Dinesh Karthik took the attack to KXIP bowlers especially Mujeeb Ur Rahman hitting him for sixes. Gill joined in with big strokes and reached his fifty off 42 balls. Karthik just timed the ball making the life tough for KXIP bowlers. Shubman Gill’s innings came to end as he was run out while trying to take the second run. Gill and Karthik put on 82 runs for the 4th wicket. Dinesh Karthik reached his fifty off just 22 balls. Arshdeep Singh bowled a brilliant 19th over giving away just 9 runs and took the big wicket of Russell.

Dinesh Karthik was run out of the final ball to help KKR post 164 for 6 in 20 overs. Chasing 165 runs to win, KL Rahul survived a catch chance as Russell hurt his knee and went to the boundary. KXIP openers looked in decent touch taking singles and hitting boundaries. At the end of the first six overs, Mayank and Rahul scored 47 for 0. With that, the first timeout was called off.

After the timeout, both batsmen looked comfortable taking singles and hitting boundaries with ease. KXIP captain Rahul completed his fifty off 42 balls while Mayank also reached his milestone off 33 balls.

Prasidh Krishna coming into the playing XI got the breakthrough dismissing Mayank Agarwal with an easy catch to Shubman Gill at deep midwicket. Kings XI Punjab openers put on 115 runs.

Nicolas Pooran came to the crease and looked in great touch putting pressure on KKR bowlers. With 22 runs required off 18 balls, Sunil Narine bowled a brilliant 18th over giving away just 2 runs and took the wicket of Pooran.

Prasidh Krishna bowled a superb 19th over giving just 6 runs and took 2 wickets including the in-form KL Rahul and Prabhsimran Singh. With 14 runs required off the final over, Maxwell hit a brilliant reverse sweep shot for a boundary. Maxwell needing to hit a six for a tie, Narine held his nerves and gave away just four runs to give KKR a thrilling 2 runs win.

For his captain’s knock of 58 from 29 balls, Dinesh Karthik was named the man of the match award.

KKR 164 for 6 in 20 overs ( Dinesh Karthik 58, Shubman Gill 57, Ravi Bishnoi 1/25) beat Kings XI Punjab 162 for 5 in 20 overs ( KL Rahul 74, Mayank Agarwal 56, Prasidh Krishna 3/29, Sunil Narine 2/28) by 2 runs.
