Manali: Woman has a special place in Indian society. In Hinduism, the woman is given the name of the goddess. This is an ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Hidimba in Manali, Himachal Pradesh. This temple built in the middle of the mountains is completely made of wood. The construction of the temple is influenced by the pagoda architectural style. It is said that the Pandavas had also come to the forests of Manali during the exile. Bhima fought with the demon Hidimb here. Bhima defeated demon Hidimb in battle and killed him. After this, his sister Hidimba married Bhima.
Hidimba pledged that he would beat his brother Hidimba into battle. She will marry him. The name of Ghatotkacha comes in the war of Mahabharata. According to folklore, he was the son of Hidimba and Bhima. On the orders of the mother, Ghatotkacha had saved Arjuna’s life from the arrow of Karna by giving his life in battle. People started worshipping Hidimba Demonic since then.
Regarding the construction of the temple, it is believed that Raja Bahadur Singh of Kullu royalty built the temple near the idol of Hidimba Devi. Even today, only Goddess Hidimba is allowed to enter the Raj Mahal in the entire Kullu Valley. All other gods and goddesses live outside the palace.
On the roof of this temple made of wood, there are 4 peaks on top of one. People of Kullu Manali consider this as their Kuldevi. The main goddess here is called Dhungri Devi, hence Hidimba Devi is also called Dhungri Devi.
The sanctum sanctorum has been built by cutting a large stone inside the temple. Which looks like a cave. Where the stages of Hidimba Devi are established. Hidimba Devi’s birth anniversary is celebrated every year on 14 May. On this occasion, special puja is performed, which is called Ghor Puja by the local people. Goddess Hidimba has a very important place in Kullu Dussehra.
