New Delhi: Sudhir Kumar Makkar, ie Golden Baba, died late on Tuesday. Due to reasons like being clad in gold jewellery and getting security from the administration during the Kanwar visits was always in talks. He was originally from Ghaziabad. Baba was ill from the last several days and his treatment was going on in AIIMS, Delhi. Gandhi Nagar is a locality in East Delhi. Gandhi Nagar is the largest wholesale market for readymade garments in the Yamuna crossing area. The journey of Golden Baba started from this market. At that time, people knew him only as Sudhir Kumar Makkar. In the clothing market, he used to work as a tailor in some way.

He loved his gold
He then started up with his own clothing business. Side by side, he also started the property work. Those who say that soon after joining the work of the property, the path of Sudhir Kumar Makkar’s way was opened. One day he suddenly disappeared and appeared directly in Haridwar. In Haridwar, in the company of Baba, Sudhir Kumar Makkar decided to become Baba himself. After this, he settled in Haridwar. As time passed, his grip on Sadhu’s life continued to grow. After a long time, when he returned to Delhi, he was ready to be a Mahant. He built a temple in Gandhinagar area and gradually converted it into an ashram. He made himself the Mahant (A Chief Priest). There was a gathering of devotees and popularity also increased. The special thing was that Sudhir Kumar Makkar had a great attachment to gold. He would donate gold as an offering to the temple. People donated and Baba’s temple became a store of gold. This gold made Sudhir Kumar Makkar a Golden Baba.

Like many other babas of the country, Golden Baba’s relationship was related to controversies. It is a different matter that on the basis of his religious image, he will remain impeccable among his devotees. But as far as the law is concerned, many cases were registered against them in the police station. There are about three dozen cases against him in different courts.

Had a special style
In the crowd of Babas, Golden Baba created a different image of himself. As the month of Sawan approached, he used to appear in a new avatar. When the Golden Baba is covered with gold ornaments from top to bottom joined the Kanwar Yatra of Sawan, the eyes of the watchers were dazzled. Two years ago, in 2018, when the Golden Baba joined his devotees in the Kanwar Yatra, the view was worth seeing. This was Golden Baba’s 25th Kanwar Yatra, in which he was wearing with 20 kg of gold jewellery. 21 gold chains, 21 lockets, a gold jacket, gold rings in all fingers and a Rolex watch worth Rs 27 lakh in the wrist.

This stock of Baba’s gold jewellery had increased year after year. Baba wore 15 kg of gold ornaments in the 2017 Kanwar Yatra and wore 12 kg of gold a year earlier. When the Golden Baba used to walk in the Kanwar Yatra to Haridwar, the eyes of the people used to stay on his jewels. Golden Baba’s association with gold was such that he considered gold to be his favourite deity. That is, his passion for jewellery was connected to his own faith. But it was not just about the jewellery. Golden Baba also had a good convoy of luxury vehicles. Which included vehicles like BMW, Audi, Fortuner and Innova.

With this frills, when Golden Baba joined the Kanwar Yatra, everyone’s focus would be on him. Obviously, it was the responsibility of the police to give protection to Baba who walked with crores of jewels. The police are busy protecting them and their jewellery. Baba’s own 20-25 guards were present with him as shadows. From UP to Uttarakhand, the administration and the police used to bother providing them security.
