Kolkata: Even after brain surgery in the army hospital in Delhi, former President Pranab Mukherjee’s condition remains critical. In such a situation, a doctor from Nadia district in West Bengal, who treated him after a car accident 13 years ago, says that “despite immense pain, he was a very calm and gentle patient”.
Doctor Basudeb Mondal, a gynaecologist by profession and owner of a nursing home in Krishnanagar, remembers the night of April 7, 2007. He says, “On that day while returning to Kolkata from Murshidabad district, Pranab Mukherjee’s car crashed at Nakashipada in Nadia district.”
A truck hit the car of the then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and caused serious head injuries.
He was first taken to a local health centre where he had stitches on his head and was sent to the government hospital in Krishnanagar.
Mondal said that ‘But there was no CT scan or X-ray facility in the hospital, I got a call from the district administration and they said to make all preparations, brought Pranab Mukherjee to my nursing home. Is going.’
He told, ‘Mukherjee was brought to my nursing home under the supervision of some of the best doctors of SSKM, Kolkata.’ He said, “Though Mukherjee was in pain, he was very calm and gentle. He was very polite. We investigated and found out that there were no internal injuries. Later that night, he was taken to Kolkata. “Doctor Mondal says that even after becoming President, he did not forget me.”
