New Delhi: Where was the first Republic Day Parade held? In answer to this question, most people would say Rajpath, but it is not so. On January 26, 1950, the first Republic Day Parade in Delhi was held at the Irwin Stadium, which is now known as the National Stadium, not on the Rajpath. At that time, due to the lack of boundary walls around the stadium, the old fort was visible behind it.

8 km long parade

According to the BBC report, between 1950-1954, the Republic Day celebrations in Delhi used to be held at Irwin Stadium, Kingsway Camp, Red Fort and sometimes at Ramlila Maidan. Now this parade, which covers a distance of eight kilometres, starts from Raisina Hill and ends at the Red Fort passing through Rajpath, India Gate.

He was the first Indian governor

In 1950, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, the country’s first Governor-General, declared India a sovereign democratic republic at 10.18 am on Thursday, 26 January. Then after six minutes, Dr Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first President of the Republic of India. Rajendra Prasad was given a cannon salute at 10.30 o’clock after taking oath in the Durbar Hall of the then Government House and today’s Rashtrapati Bhavan. This tradition of gun salute continues from the 70s to the present day.

Tradition still prevails today

The President’s caravan left Government House at 2.30 pm towards Irwin Stadium, circling Connaught Place and its surrounding areas, reaching the saluting stage at around 4.45 pm. 15 thousand people had arrived to see the main Republic Parade held at Irvine Stadium. All three forces of the Armed Forces participated in the parade held at that time. In this parade, besides the Navy, Infantry, Cavalry Regiment, Services Regiment, seven bands of the Army also participated. This historical tradition continues even today.

The President of Indonesia was the chief guest here

Indonesia’s President Sukarno was the chief guest of the first Republic Day. This day was declared a national holiday for the first time. For more participation of the countrymen, from the year 1951, the Republic Day celebrations started on the Kingsway, which is now known as Rajpath. Let us inform you that for the first time in the Republic Day celebrations of 1951, the four Bravehearts were given the highest decoration Param Vir Chakra for their indomitable courage.
