Kathmandu: Nepal’s cable TV operators, after China, on Monday partially lifted restrictions on Indian private news channels. Cable Television Operators Association vice-president Dhurba Sharma told reporters that a meeting of cable operators has decided to lift the ban on Indian news channels and only a few news channels are banned in Nepal. Sharma said, “Some news channels broadcasting objectionable material are still banned in the country.”

The Cable Television Operators Association in Nepal banned all Indian private news channels, except Doordarshan, accusing them of broadcasting news that hurt the national sentiment of Nepal. Nepal’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology also thanked the cable operators for taking action against Indian news channels.

Nepal sent a “diplomatic comment” to India on Friday and requested to take action against its country and leaders on broadcasting such programs which according to it are “bogus, baseless and insensitive as well as insulting”. Nepal on Thursday banned all Indian private channels except Doordarshan. He had alleged that these channels were broadcasting news that hurt the sentiments of the country.
