New Delhi: For the first time in the history of Indian naval aviation, 2 women officers have been selected to join the helicopter stream as ‘Observers’ (aerial strategists). These two women officers are Sub Lieutenant Kumudini Tyagi and Sub Lieutenant Reeti Singh.
This will be the first batch of women warriors who will take part in aerial combat operated by warships. Earlier, the entry of women was confined to join frontline warships crew aircraft, which fly from the coast and land on the coast.

These two women officers are part of a group of 17 officers of the Indian Navy who were awarded ‘Wings’ when they graduated as ‘Observers’ at a function held on 21 September at INS Garuda, Kochi.
On this occasion, Rear Admiral Antony George commended the officers for graduating, saying that this is a historic occasion for the first time women are being trained for helicopter operations which will eventually lead to women in frontline warships of the Indian Navy. Will pave the way for deployment.
The ceremony was presided over by Rear Admiral Antony George, who is the Chief Staff Officer of the training. He honoured all graduating officers with awards and ‘wings’. Apart from this, the chief guest honoured 6 other officers (5 officers including 1 female officer of the Indian Army and 1 officer of the Indian Coast Guard) with ‘Instructor Badge’.
These officers of the 91st Regular Course and 22nd SSC Observer Course are trained in air navigation, flight procedures, air combat strategies, anti-submarine warfare etc. These officers will serve in the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard’s seafaring aircraft and anti-submarine warplanes.
Lt Hitesh Singh was awarded the Uttar Pradesh Trophy from the 91st regular course. While Lt. Anuj Kumar was awarded the Eastern Naval Command Trophy. Lieutenant Hitesh Singh was awarded the Sub Lieutenant RV Kunte Memorial Book Prize. Sub Lieutenant Karishma R from the 22nd SSC Observer Course was awarded the Book Prize for being included in the ‘Best in Overall Order of Merit’.
