India and Russia have signed a deal worth about Rs 35000 crore for this air defence system. Under the deal, India will get five squadrons to deal with an air range of 400 km. Sources said the equipment is being brought to India by both sea and air routes. After the deployment of the first squadron in the country, the IAF will start focusing on the eastern frontiers for its deployment along with providing resources for training of its personnel within the country. Some officers and personnel of the Indian Air Force have also taken training in Russia to operate the S-400.

The S-400 missile system is equipped with four different missiles that can destroy enemy aircraft, ballistic missiles and AWACS aircraft from a distance of 400 km, 250 km, 120 km and 40 km respectively. Sources say that while bargaining with Russia on this deal, India managed to reduce about one billion dollars.
