The Taliban have announced that Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada will be their Supreme Leader.
“Consultations are almost finalised on the new government, and the necessary discussions have also been held about the cabinet. The Islamic government that we will announce will be a model for the people. There is no doubt about the presence of the Commander of the Faithful (Akhunzada) in the government. He will be the leader of the government and there should be no question on this,” Samangani said, as per Tolo News.
Earlier, the round of meetings were going on regarding the new Taliban regime in Afghanistan. According to reports in Bhaskar, a plan of governance is being prepared in Afghanistan on the lines of Iran. The tallest leader of the Taliban, Hibatullah Akhundzada, can be made the Supreme Leader. The picture can be clear about this on Thursday, 2 September. It is believed that important announcements related to the formation of the new government can also be made on this day.
The ‘New York Times’ has also published a report about the Taliban government in Afghanistan. It also said that a consensus has been reached on making Akhundzada the Supreme Leader and it can be announced soon. This will be a completely Islamic government.
Akhundzada himself is presiding over the ongoing meetings in Kandahar regarding government formation. Taliban sources have also confirmed this. According to the report, the Supreme Leader will be called ‘Zaim’ or ‘Rahbar’ in Afghanistan. Broadly speaking, it can be assumed that the decision of the Supreme Leader will be final. The same system is also in place in the Shia-majority country of Iran. There Ayatollah Khamenei is the Supreme Leader. There is the Shura Council followed by the Parliament and the President. The President is directly elected by the people.
It is not yet clear whether the Taliban will include leaders of other tribes or tribes in the government, as promised. The most important departments are considered to be the Ministry of Communications and Home. According to ‘Bloomberg’ news, the picture can be clear about this only on Thursday. It is believed that Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar will handle the day-to-day functioning of the government. However, what would his position be? It’s not clear. Baradar had led talks with the US in Qatar.
According to reports, after Akhundzada and Baradar, there are two more names to be entrusted with important responsibilities in the government. These are – Mulla Mohammad Yacob and Sirajuddin Haqqani. They can also be made advisors to Akhundzada. It is also not clear whether former presidents Hamid Karzai and Abdullah-Abdullah will join the government. So far nothing has been cleared about the Shura Council.
Akhundzada was born in 1961 in Panjwai District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. He belongs to Noorzai clan. His father Mulla Mohammad Akhund was a religious scholar. He was the Imam of the village mosque. He had neither land nor any property. He used to run the house with the donation money and grains received in the mosque. Hibatullah Akhundzada received training from his father.
It is the early 1980s. Soviet Union troops had arrived in Afghanistan. The Afghan government was running under his protection. Many mujahideen were fighting against the army and the government. These Mujahideen used to get help from America and Pakistan. Hibtollah Akhundzada’s family moved to Quetta, Pakistan and took up arms. Later the Taliban was formed and it became a part of it.
