Mumbai: Eminent classical music singer Pandit Jasraj will be cremated with state honors today (Thursday). The body of Pandit Jasraj reached Mumbai from America on Wednesday. Pandit Jasraj, 90, died in New Jersey on Monday due to cardiac arrest.
In Mumbai, his body was kept at the residence in Versova for the last darshan. According to the family, the last rites will be performed on the cremation ground of Vile Parle, Mumbai. Pandit Jasraj’s daughter Durga Jasraj and his family are shocked at the demise of Padma Vibhushan classical music singer.
Pandit Jasraj is left behind by his wife Madhura, son Sharang Dev Pandit and daughter Durga Jasraj. Pandit Jasraj of Mewati Gharana dominated the world of Indian classical music for eight decades. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1975, Padma Bhushan in 1990 and Padma Vibhushan in 2000. He increased the value of classical music in the country as well as abroad.
The entire country including Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mourned the demise of the noted musician. Pandit Jasraj trained classical music at the age of just 14 and later learned tabla playing from his elder brother Pandit Pratap Narayan.
