The Hague: Nearly two years after the outbreak of the Kovid-19 pandemic, the world seems to be battling a new strain of the virus that has surfaced in the past. This form of the virus is likely to thwart the protection provided by the vaccine. A WHO committee has named the new form of the coronavirus ‘Omicron’ and termed it as a ‘very contagious worrying form’. Earlier, this category had the delta form of the coronavirus, due to which people in many parts of Europe and America lost their lives on a large scale.

The world panicked due to this strain of Corona

Since the appearance of the new form of the coronavirus, various countries of the world are imposing travel restrictions from South African countries so that the spread of the new form can be stopped. On the advice of the WHO, many countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Iran, Japan, Thailand, America, European Union countries and Britain have imposed restrictions on travel from South African countries. Despite the closure of aircraft operations, there is such evidence that this form is spreading. New cases have been reported in travellers from Belgium, Israel and Hong Kong. Perhaps a case has also come to the fore in Germany. Officials in Holland are investigating the redesign after 61 passengers were found infected with Kovid-19 on two planes coming from South Africa.

Biden expressed concern

US President Joe Biden said about the new format, ‘It seems to spread rapidly.’ Announcing the new travel restrictions, he said, ‘I have decided that we will be careful.’

Even WHO is not able to solve the mystery

The WHO said that the actual dangers of Omicron are not yet understood, but preliminary evidence suggests that the risk of re-infection is higher than other highly infectious forms. This means that people who have been infected with Kovid-19 and have recovered from it can get infected again. However, it will take weeks to know whether existing vaccines are less effective against it.

America imposed sanctions

The White House said that from Monday, the US will impose restrictions on people coming from South Africa and 7 other countries in the region. Biden said that this means that no one will come or go from these countries except American citizens and permanent residents returning to the country. Medical experts, including the WHO, have cautioned against over-reacting before this pattern is studied in detail. But after the death of more than 50 lakh people worldwide due to this virus, people are scared.

The UK will also take action

Britain’s Health Minister Sajid Javid told MPs, ‘We should move towards taking every possible step as soon as possible. Cases have been observed.

South Africa is considering

South African experts said there was no indication as of now whether this form could make people more seriously ill. Like other forms, no symptoms have been seen in some infected people. Although some genetic changes seem to be worrying, it is not yet clear how much of the threat to public health is. The first few forms, such as the beta form, initially worried scientists, but it did not spread that much.

Stock market getting affected

The new format immediately affected the stock markets around the world. Key indices fell in Asia, Europe and America. Germany’s Health Minister Jens Spahn said, ‘This redesign will create many problems.’

Countries imposed travel restrictions

Britain, European Union countries and some other countries imposed new travel restrictions on Friday, and some of these countries imposed restrictions within hours of the new form being revealed. Asked why the US waited until Monday, Biden said, “Just because that’s what my medical team recommended.”

EU in favour of suspending flights

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “Flights should be postponed until we have a clear understanding of the danger posed by this redesign and those returning from the region.” Travellers should follow strict isolation rules.
