New Delhi: Given the increased panic of the new strain of coronavirus Omicron across the world, there is a demand to stop blowing air coming from abroad in the country. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has once again appealed to the central government to ban air flights. Kejriwal has made this appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a tweet message.

Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “Many countries have stopped incoming flights from Omicron affected countries. Why are we delaying? In the first wave also we had delayed stopping foreign flights. Most of the foreign flights that come to Delhi. Delhi is the worst affected. PM sahib please stop the flights immediately.” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has appealed to the central government to ban international flights once in the past as well.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated Omicron as a cause of concern (VOC) of the coronavirus. The decision has triggered a massive shift in priorities in pandemic management globally. The WHO has recommended, among other things, increased surveillance.

More restrictions on international travel are already in place in the UK and many other countries. Japan has closed its borders to all foreign tourists. The rapidity is shown in declaring this version of the virus as a VOC is astonishing. A little more than two weeks have passed since the first known infections of the virus in Botswana and South Africa.

Compare Omicron with the Delta version that is currently active in Europe and many other parts of the world, it took at least six months to get VOC status. There was certainly a slowdown in recognizing the threat posed by Delta, and no doubt a lesson has been learned about the importance of telling the world about dangerous new forms of the virus as soon as possible, but this delay is a new one. It also reflects the difficulties faced in providing solid evidence regarding the capabilities of the edition.
