The study, published in the journal ‘The Lancet’, involved 127 adults from 6 government hospitals in Hong Kong and examined the efficacy of anti-viral drugs in reducing coronavirus infection.
According to the researchers, the treatment included a combination of interferon-beta-1b, the antiviral drugs lopinavir-ritonavir and ribavirin. This combination proved to be better at reducing infection than lopinavir-ritonavir.
He emphasized the need for extensive testing in the third phase to examine the effect of combining these three drugs in the treatment of critically ill patients. He said that these preliminary findings were derived only from the treatment of mildly ill people.
Scientists said that compared to Lopinavir-Ritonavir, treatment with these drugs showed improvement and people can stay in hospitals for less time.
