New Delhi: On Monday, two days before the commencement of the monsoon session of the assembly in Haryana, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Assembly Speaker Gyanchand Gupta and two BJP MLAs were found infected with COVID-19. Khattar was found infected with the coronavirus on Monday. Khattar attended a meeting with Union Waterpower Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat six days ago.
Shekhawat was also found infected.
An official said that the Chief Minister was taken to PGIMER Hospital in the evening for a detailed investigation. His condition is stable. Khattar tweeted, “I have been found infected with the coronavirus in the investigation today. The infection has been confirmed in my test report. I appeal to my colleagues and concerned people that the people who have come in contact with me since last week should get themselves investigated. I request all those in close contact to move in isolation.
After a meeting with Shekhawat on the Sutlej Yamuna Sampark Canal issue in New Delhi, Khattar had conducted an investigation of COVID-19 on Thursday but the infection was not confirmed. On Thursday, as a precaution, Khattar decided to go for a separate stay for three days. Khattar will not be able to participate in the monsoon session.
The Speaker had asked all the MLAs and the staff of the Legislative Assembly to conduct an inquiry before the session commencing on August 26. The Chief Minister also conducted an inquiry on Monday. Health Minister Anil Vij said that Assembly Speaker Gupta (73) and BJP MLAs Aseem Goyal and Ram Kumar were also found infected with COVID -19.
Officials said that six assembly members have also been found infected. Gupta represents Panchkula constituency while Goyal and Kumar are MLAs from Ambala City and Indri respectively. In the absence of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker Ranbir Gangwa will conduct the proceedings of the House.
On the suggestion of the Health Minister, the Speaker last week had asked all the people coming to the Assembly premises in the monsoon session to investigate COVID-19. Officials said that to ensure proper distance in the house, the arrangement of the meeting will also change. The Haryana Legislative Assembly has 90 members.
In the past, BJP MPs from Hisar and Kurukshetra Brijendra Singh and Naib Singh Saini and party MLA Subhash Sudha from Thanesar were also found infected.
Earlier in the day, Gupta tweeted that he had undergone an investigation on Sunday and his report confirmed the infection. The Speaker asked the people who came in contact with him in the last few days to conduct an inquiry and go in separate houses.
