Tejaswi Surya reveals ‘bribe instead of bed’ scam
BJP MP Tejaswi Surya, along with MLAs Satish Reddy and Uday Garudchar, faced BBMP officers on Tuesday in connection with the racket, after which the case was handed over to the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for investigation. BJP leaders accused the officials of the BBMP War Room of giving beds for Corona patients to ‘patients without symptoms’ and that ‘they were charging Rs 40,000 to stop a bed’. BJP MPs and MLAs questioned the civic body officials as to ‘how can the beds be blocked for entry of a new patient within thirty seconds of the discharge of the previous patient?’ In addition, BJP MP Tejaswi Surya called the war room. Accused the personnel of being related to each other and questioned the ‘recruitment process’ of 17 persons and the whereabouts of the agency concerned.
Addressing a press conference, Tejaswi Surya said that “There were enough beds in Bengaluru city, but none of them was available to the people as the war room staff are running a racket of false blocking beds and then they got those people are allocated to whom they want.” The BJP Yuva Morcha president claimed that there is a ‘nexus’ between some BBMP officials, Arogya Mitra hospitals and private agents who are involved in the scam.
MP Tejaswi Surya termed it as the ‘most disgusting’ thing in the corona epidemic – saying “beds are blocks in the name of patients with no symptoms, people who are in home isolation and who are not even aware that a bed in their name is retained. Subsequently, the outside agents talk to the personnel in the war room and give beds to those who pay some money to a person outside.”
CM Yeddyurappa assured of strict action
After the scandal was exposed by Tejaswi Surya, Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa said that strict action would be taken against those involved in the racket. Later in the evening, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said that the case lodged at Jayanagar police station has been handed over to CCB for an in-depth investigation in which two accused were arrested for cheating.
An FIR for bed blocking has been registered at the Jaynagar police station under crime number 83/21 in the case and agents Rohit and Netra have been arrested. Both have been booked under sections 420 and 384 of the IPC. They have reportedly sold ICU beds to patients with Rs 50,000 per bed. Police have also seized 1,05,000 from his bank account and further investigations are on.
