New Delhi: In the national capital Delhi facing the second wave of Coronavirus, cases of Black Fungus are increasing very fast. A person’s life has also been lost due to this disease.
More than 20 patients are getting daily
Expressing concern over this, Prof MV Padma Srivastava of the Department of Neurology at AIIMS Delhi said, ‘the number of Black fungus cases is increasing rapidly. We’ve crossed the 3-digit mark. We’ve made mucor wards separately at AIIMS Trauma centre & AIIMS Jhajjar. We’re getting over 20 cases of Black fungus daily.’
Sugar patients get more trouble if they get corona
She told that ‘The index of suspicion of contracting Black fungus is very high because of low immunity. If Covid happens to diabetic people, sugar should be strictly controlled and there should be rational use of steroids.’
Does giving more steroids increase the risk of fungus?
AIIMS Delhi director Dr Randeep Guleria said steroids are usually needed for only 5 to 10 days, if these medicines are given to the patient for more days, then the risk of black fungus increases significantly. If giving steroids, it is also the responsibility of the health staff to monitor the patient thoroughly. Monitoring of the patient is very important to avoid black fungus.
What is black fungus? Who causes this disease
Black fungus is a rare fungal infection caused by a group of moulds or fungi. It affects the sinuses or lungs. Cases of black fungus are being seen in India 14 to 15 days after defeating Corona. However, it has also been found in some patients to be positive. This disease occurs only to those whose body immunity is low. According to the Ministry of Health, so far it has spread in 11 states of the country.
What are the possible symptoms of black fungus?
Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has tweeted that redness or pain in the eyes, fever, cough, headache, shortness of breath, blurred vision, vomiting, bleeding or mental state are symptoms of black fungus.
